Cruisers Sports for the Physically Disabled, (also known as Mississauga Cruisers or Halton/Peel Cruisers) was first formed in September 1986 by a dedicated group of parents who wanted their children to be able to participate in sports. As the Cruisers grew and evolved over the years, we became incorporated in March 1999, and a charitable organization number was received in March 2000. Because of the name, an individual member is often referred to as a "Cruiser". Cruisers Sports is a member of the Ontario Sledge Hockey Association

Today the club has over 50 members, ranging in age from 8 to over 50, a board of directors and currently offers the choice of 3 sports for it's members to participate in; Sledge Hockey, Boccia and various Track & Field Programs.

Contents

[edit] Disabilities

Many Cruisers have Cerebral Palsy or Spina Bifida, others are amputees, while one athlete is blind. Cruisers Sports enables athletes with various levels of disabilities to participate in sports and other activities they would not otherwise have outside the club.

[edit] Funding & Donations

Cruisers Sports for the Physically Disabled relies on support from outside donors, financial grants, members and individuals. 100% of donations go to the programs and equipment for the members.
Cruiser volunteers consist of everything from coaches to event helpers to the Board of Directors.

[edit] Track & Field

The Cruisers offer Wheelchair Racing, Discus, Shot Put as well as Javelin.

[edit] Sledge Hockey

The Cruisers have 3 teams in their program - 1 at the Junior level (for members younger than 16), and 2 at the Intermediate level, named All Blacks & Silver Streak.

[edit] Toronto Express

Toronto Express Sledge Hockey is a team put together to represent the Toronto Region for the Ontario Paralympic Championships[1] in Kitchener, Ontario in April 2007. The Toronto Express currently consist primarily of Cruisers, however the team hopes to incorporate more members from the area for next year.
