Crown Point State Historic Site

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Crown Point State Historic Site is the site of a former military strongpoint near the south end of the wide part of Lake Champlain. The location is in Essex County, New York, USA. The site is on a peninsula in the Town of Crown Point.

Crown Point is the location of the 1734-1759 French-built Fort St. Frédéric limestone fortress and an even more ambitious British fort constructed during the French and Indian War, starting in 1759: the Crown Point fort. This latter fort was meant to re-enforce nearby Fort Ticonderoga in protecting the vital route between Albany and Quebec. During the American Revolution, the fort was captured by the Green Mountain Boys militia on May 11, 1775, but was retaken by the British early in the summer of 1777.

The historic forts, once at the front line of the clash between two mighty European nations, both remain as original ruins and are operated as a historic attraction by the State of New York.
