Elections for Chamber of Counties of Croatian Parliament were held on April 1, 1997.
This was the first election in history of post-Communist Croatia when the same electoral rules were applied for the second time.
Croatian Democratic Union, Croatia's ruling party, entered those legislation weakened by Zagreb Crisis, defections and continuous speculations about health of its leader Franjo Tudjman.
Croatian opposition, on the other hand, was emboldened by those events, but it again failed to act as united front. Leaders of Croatian Social Liberal Party and Croatian Peasant Party believed that they could defeat HDZ without help of other parties. In the end, HDZ used that and won 42 out of 68 seats.
The rest was won by candidates of HSLS, HSS, Istrian Democratic Assembly and Social Democratic Party of Croatia. SDP, despite winning only 2 seats, emerged as the strongest single opposition party in Croatia.
This election for Croatian Chamber of Counties was the last one. The Chamber was abolished after constitutional changes in 2001.
