Whoever did this page is a genius. Gotta be ridged salt n vinegar crisps in the sarnie everytime!

  • I wish to challenge the assertion that a crisp sandwich is best enjoyed with a mug of tea. I say, with not a whisper of uncertainty in my heart, that the high tannin levels in tea can cause unexpected and unpleasant taste reactions with many of the common British crisp flavours. I prefer coffee. I therefore suggest that the last sentence of the initial section be changed to "The crisp sandwich is sometimes taken with a mug of tea by the reckless and foolhardy, but those who truly appreciate this delicacy know that it is best complemented by a mug of coffee." • Another thing: I think it might be worth mentioning the type of bread with which the crisp sandwich is usually made. I haven't made one in several years (maybe I will in the next few days as a special Christmas treat) but when I have made them it has always been with white bread. Brown bread would be just too wholesome (though I prefer brown bread for most other sandwiches). Essentially, I think, the bread in a crisp sandwich is a device for delivering crushed, crunchy crisps (nestled in butter or a butter substitute) into the mouth of the gourmand, though the softness of the bread is also important in its own right in providing a stimulating contrast to the crunchiness of the crisps. The stronger flavour of brown bread would compete too earnestly with the flavour of the crisps, and the nutty bits in a granary loaf, for example, would also provide unwanted distraction. Do others agree that white bread is most common in the crisp sandwich? Leon Robbins 13:35, 24 December 2006 (UTC)
  • Yup, white bread is the only way to go with this one. I've got to also say that the idea of drinking coffee with a crisp sandwich is quite outragous, not only is tea the correct choice of beverage to accompany a crisp sandwich, but, more specifically, Earl Grey is the tea of choice I believe.
