Cristina Mittermeier (born November 26, 1966) in Mexico City is a marine biologist, photographer and biochemical engineer. She has coauthored several books for both popular and scientist audiences, and has coauthored several scientific papers as well as countless popular articles in magazines around the world.

Cristina Mittermeier received her degree from the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, ITESM in Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico in 1989.

Prior to becoming a professional photographer, she conducted fieldwork in the Gulf of California and the Yucatan Peninsula in subjects including marine mammals, fisheries, aquaculture, biodiversity research and conservation.

Mittermeier was married to Dr. Russell Mittermeier, President of Conservation International in 1991 and together they are raising two young children, Michael Mittermeier (14) and Juliana Mittermeier(10) in Great Falls, Virginia. An older child, John Mittermeier (21), is an undergraduate student at Yale University.

Mittermeier studied photography at the Corcoran College for the Arts in Washington, D.C.. Her images focus on demonstrating the important relationship between human cultures, especially indigenous people and biodiversity. All of her photography is created with the specific mission of raising awareness on the importance of biodiversity for the well-being of humans.

Cristina Mittermeier has coathored eight books with the sponsorship of Cemex a Mexican cement company. Among them Hotspots, Megadiversity, Wildlife Spectacles, Wilderness Areas, Transboundary Conservation and more recently, The Human Footprint stand out.

Cristina Mittermeier is a regular feature in National Geographic Explorer Magazine. She also writes articles about conservation and photography for magazines around the world.

She sits in the Board of Directors of the WILD Foundation, the Chairman's Council of Conservation International, the Advisory Board of Nature's Best Magazine and is the Executive Director of the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP), a consortium of photographers dedicated to furthering environmental and cultural conservation through the use of photography.
