Crime Story, aka. Police Story IV and New Police Story (Original title: 重案組) is a 1993 Hong Kong movie, directed by Kirk Wong and Jackie Chan, and starring Jackie Chan. Unlike almost all of Chan's films, which feature a combination of comedy and action, Crime Story is a serious movie with no humorous moments at all. This movie is based on actual events surrounding the 1990 kidnapping of Wong Tak-fei.

[edit] Filming locations

The film is set mainly in Hong Kong, and partially in Taiwan.

It includes real scenes of building explosions filmed in the deserted Kowloon Walled City, which was destroyed in the same year.

[edit] Plot

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

In the movie, Inspector Eddie Chan (Jackie Chan) attempts to find a kidnapped businessman, and it takes him from Hong Kong to Taiwan in search of him. What complicates matters is that there is a mole within the police force, destined to try to stop Chan from finding the kidnapped businessman.

The movie is based on the kidnapping of Hong Kong property billionaire Wong Tak-fei or otherwise known as Teddy Wang, even though they changed his name.

In the end, the mole reveals the location of the businessman on a boat, and he is rescued. However, this is fictionalized, as in real life, Wong Tak-fei has never been found. Many believe that he was thrown off the boat when police closed in to his location.

[edit] Box Office

This film grossed HK $27,457,147 at the Hong Kong box office.

[edit] US Version

The version released on video and DVD in North America by Miramax was dubbed to English, although unlike most such released it contained its original musical score. Jackie's character had the name "Eddie" replaced with "Jackie" in the dub.

There were two cuts made:

- The pre-credits sequence with the kidnappers was removed.

- In the last scene, where Wong Yat Fei's wife tells him to thank Chan.

[edit] Cast and roles include

  • Jackie Chan - inspector Eddie Chan
  • Kent Cheng - detective Hung
  • Chung Fat - Ng Kwok Wats
  • Law Hang Kang - Wong
  • Sau Leung Ko (aka Blacky Ko) - Captain Ko
