Creswell Model Village

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Creswell Model Village is an arts and crafts style village built in Creswell, Derbyshire in 1895 by the Bolsover Mining Company to accommodate workers and families of the newly founded Creswell Colliery (on land leased from the Welbeck Estate). Influenced by garden village principles, its purpose was to provide the workers with modern facilities; the village even provided a miniature railway to deliver coal to the houses. Designed around a large village green the houses are of varying styles and form a large oval shape with an access road through the centre.

Creswell Model Village was designed by architect Percy B. Houfton.

Located within the Parish of Elmton with Creswell in the district of Bolsover on the North East edge of Derbyshire.

The houses that make up the Model Village display a range of decorative roofing styles.
