Cremophor EL

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cremophor EL is polyethoxylated castor oil. Polyethoxylated castor oil is a mixture of ricinoleic acid, polyglycol ester, glyerol polyglycol esters, and polyglycols [1].

Cremophor EL is an excipient or additive in drugs. Therapeutically, modern drugs are rarely given in a pure chemical state, so most active ingredients are combined with excipients or additives such as Cremophor EL [2]

[edit] Uses

Cremophor EL is used in Taxol (paclitaxel) and has been called as a dose limiting agent because of its toxicities. A formulation that uses nanoparticle albumin instead of Cremophor EL is marketed as an alternative.[3][4]
