Here's some extra tips to help you get around in the 'pedia!

  • If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills the Sandbox is for you.
  • You can sign your name using three tildes (~). If you use four, you can add a datestamp too. Five will get you the datestamp only.
  • You may want to add yourself to the new user log.
  • If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.
  • If you're still entirely confused, or would like to get a better grasp of your wikipedia skills, and you have an IRC client (or don't mind getting one), check out the Bootcamp. It's not what it sounds like, but it is fun and can help you with your editing skills.
  • If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random page button in the sidebar, or check out the Open Task message in the Community Portal.

Keeping Wikipedia accurate and verifiable is very important, and as you might be aware there is currently a drive to improve the quality of Wikipedia by encouraging editors to cite the sources they used when adding content. Can you provide in the article specific references to any books, articles, websites or other reliable sources that will allow people to verify the content in the article? Question It looked like you created this article on Oct 8, and wrote that Chilton "is the current Democratic nominee for Arizona's 4th congressional district seat". In response to your note on Talk:John Kanno, I am the one who is putting speedy deletion tags on most of the congressional candidate articles. (Some articles have already recieved tags from others). That is because Wikipedia is an encyclopedia; unless a candidate would be notable in, say, 100 years time, he or she should not have a distinct encyclopedia article. It is reasonable to discuss candidates and their positions in the context of an article on the particular race they are involved in; if material for that article grows too large, then at that time it might be a good idea to create an article on the candidates themselves. Until then, it's unnecessary, and the pages will need to be deleted in any case in a few months' time. I suggest that the best place for this information is either:

  1. On an individual article for each race, not each candidate; or
  2. Not on Wikipedia at all, but rather at Project Vote Smart, which will happily accept your volunteer efforts.

Hi, I've noticed you've been creating a lot of similar stubs on candidates for Congress. I've been going through and "wikifying" them by adding links, categories, and tags on the talk pages, and I would appreciate it if you could take care of that (you can see your old contributions at Special:Contributions/CrabshackJoe).

Also, I feel you should know that many Wikipedians won't consider many of these articles notable enough to, well, exist. They may start being nominated for deletion soon, under the Candidates and Elections guidelines, which state that, "Only if and when there is enough independent, verifiable information to write a non-stub article on a candidate should one be written." I'm not going to bother nominating any myself, but you should be prepared for the possibility, and keep an eye on your old contributions, either through Special:Contributions/CrabshackJoe or your Watchlist. -David Schaich Talk/Cont 02:21, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

  • Indeed you are correct, I have just nominated the first of these, Anthony DeMaio. In general, Wikipedia should not have a page on a candidate unless there is already a page for the election (race), and we have so much information on the candidate that it won't fit on the election page.
