I've launched a Jabber bot that does realtime notification of watched pages on the English Wikipedia.

My school newspaper published an article on Wikipedia, and used me as a source. (VandalSniper was even given a mention!) See the article on my blog.

I will probably be very inactive on Wikipedia for a while. The semester is getting tougher (as usual) and on top of that I have met a beautiful young woman -- sorry Wikipedia, but you can guess where I would rather be spending my time.  :)

In light of the above, I am looking for users willing to moderate the VandalSniper user list. Feel free to email me or leave a note on my talk page. There are no specific criteria, but in general people who have been around Wikipedia for longer and have done more RC patrol stand a better chance.

My name is Chris Howie. I am a sophomore computer science student at Anderson University. Some consider me a Linux evangelist; I consider myself informed. Some people call me a geek; they are absolutely correct.

Born 1986, I lived in upstate New York from birth to 2000, when I moved to Indiana after my parents joined Keynote, a division of Campus Crusade for Christ.

I overuse userboxes. Woe to you who don't use 1280x1024!

I used to play chess quite a bit, but not so much recently. FICS is my preferred community when I do play. Sometimes I rollerblade too.

Just your typical free software developer. I got into Linux after seeing it on a friend's laptop. (I met this friend while touring with Keynote, actually.) I started off with Red Hat Linux 7.2, which I used for maybe three years, then moved on to Debian and have been very happy with it. Windows XP is still lying around, because Guild Wars doesn't work very well with Cedega.

I started programming around maybe seven or eight with Visual Basic 1. After learning the basics of that, I managed to maintain several Visual Basic, QBasic, and Commodore 64 BASIC programs at the same time. Later my dad got me Visual Basic 5 for my birthday, and Visual Basic 6 came several years later from another friend I met on a Keynote tour.

After installing Linux I began learning Perl and since have abandoned Visual Basic as a maintainable programming language. After Perl came C, then PHP, and then Java. I received formal C# training at Anderson University, although Google probably could have done just as good a job. I'm actively coding in C# now, primarily on VandalSniper.

YICS is one of my free software projects, and probably the most popular seeing as it's the only one that I've made an effort to maintain.

Recently I have begun considering networking as a career instead of programming, although I still enjoy programming.

In August 2006 I started learning Dvorak. While I haven't tested my WPM, it feels like I can type the same speed with Dvorak and QWERTY, and I get faster at Dvorak every day. I absolutely love the layout.

Most of my time is spent patrolling the recent changes for vandalism, and tagging new pages (stubs, un-wikified articles, speedy deletion candidates, and so on). As a college student, most of my writing effort goes into papers, so by the time I get to Wikipedia all my creative energy is used up. I figure I might as well help out by tagging articles and reverting vandalism.

Note that if I tag one of your articles as a speedy deletion candidate, it's usually after a quick Google search about the subject with few, if any, hits. I mean no personal insult to you as an editor, and when people get unnecessarily angry and vandalize my user page it does not help the situation at all. If you feel that my delete tag is inappropriate, do not remove it (most of the speedy templates say not to), but discuss on the article's talk page and refrain from petty revenge.

If the article is clearly an attempt to add nonsense to Wikipedia I will try to assume good faith, but please take my warning non-personally and consider contributing material valuable to the project. If your goal is to upset people, you will rarely succeed; we will delete or revert and move on. If your goal is to help and contribute to articles, your help will be much appreciated by the whole community, something you will get much more satisfaction from than the three minutes your vandalism or attack articles exist for.

If you would like to contact me right away regarding a tag I left on an article, you may do so (see contact information below). My talk page is, of course, always available for this, but with realtime services you can catch me when I might not be actively browsing Wikipedia.

I keep the following subpages, mostly for my benefit but feel free to use their contents. I would request that you refrain from editing them. This is the only shameless plugging I will do. Period.

The RfA passed! I have written a response to everyone at Wikipedia talk:Requests for adminship/Crazycomputers. Thanks everyone for participating!
