Craven Community College

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Established in 1965, Craven Community College in North Carolina was originally an extension of Lenoir Community College—Craven IEC (Industrial Education Center). It later added degree-awarding programs in several technical fields and became a technical institute. In the early 1970s, college-transfer degrees were added and the school became a community college. The college is locally known as an East Carolina University junior satellite campus as over 79% of the faculty and staff have earned a degree from that institution making for a fairly homogenic faculty pool. In fact, having earned some degree from ECU is almost a requisite credential for anyone who wants to be employed at this institution because of the "good old boy and girl" connection that it conveys.

Technical and transfer programs are offered to the various students. There are three campuses: New Bern (main campus), Havelock and MCAS Cherry Point in Craven County, North Carolina. Dr. Scott Ralls is the president of the college; Dr. Cindy Hess is the executive vice president. The college motto is Reaching New Heights and the college mascot is the panther. The college is known for its nursing (ADN degree), allied health, computer science, and aeronautical technology (AAS degree) programs. In addition, a liberal-arts program leading to the AA degree is available. Many graduates have successfully transferred to senior institutions to seek bachelor's and advanced degrees.

[edit] New Bern Campus (main)

New Bern is where most of the classes and college offices are located, and also the seat of government for Craven County. The various buildings located in New Bern contain the college studies and student activities. Many students who attend this campus live either in New Bern or surrounding areas, including Havelock.

[edit] Havelock Campus

The Havelock Campus is primarily known for being the home of the Institute of Aeronautical Technology (IAT). It is in proximity to MCAS Cherry Point and to its Naval Aviation Depot (NADEP), so there is a chance for certified students from the IAT school to work on the Air Station upon graduation. Several classes are held here, online, Cherry Point campus or at Havelock High School.

The Havelock campus is a combination of three buildings; the Craven-Carteret-Pamlico reigional library, the Lewis Redd classroom and laboratory building, and the IAT. The Redd Building contains the administration offices for the Havelock campus, 6 computer labs, classrooms, and the Academic Skills Center.

[edit] MCAS Cherry Point Campus

Located at the Training and Education (T&E) building, the campus is available to anyone living on the base. Several classes from the Havelock Campus are also held here, but these can be attended by anyone. A person who does not have base access can go to the Base Pass Office to get a pass to attend classes.

[edit] Craven Early College

Craven Early College (CEC) was created out of a strong partnership between Craven County Schools and Craven Community College. The school is a small autonomous high school located on the campus of the college. The school’s small size supports innovative ideas, creative teachers, and attention to detail. Students who attend will graduate with a high school diploma and up to two years of college credit toward a bachelor’s degree or an associate’s degree. The structure of Craven Early College fosters academic acceleration, personalization and connections to workplace knowledge and skills. The school will be centered on improving graduation rates and preparing students for life-long learning and entry into high-skill careers. This is a student of CECs text: "We all have hopes and ambitions. This is a place that we can accheve (sic)these things."

[edit] Job Interviewing at this College

Job interviewing for faculty roles at this campus is generally accomplished by inviting 3-4 top candidates for a powerpoint presentation of their most recent work. A panel of faculty, administrators, and students participate in the session and a question and answer interview is done prior to the presentation. The presentation is an open event. The top candidate is referred for a more intensive interview and, if selected, is nominiated to the President who then has the final hiring decision.

Job interviewing at this campus for administrative roles is a three tiered interview process. A list of eligibles is produced and six to eight candidates are invited for a screening interview. The candidate is quickly ushered into a room, introduced to 8-10 people of various roles at the campus sitting at a large table, and a series of 16-20 questions are posed to the candidate (usually 2 per person) in a counterclockwise direction. The process is rapid and is completed within 45 minutes. A smaller number of those individuals are then invited back for a more formal interview process that includes those people who the candidate will be working more closely with. This interview lasts about 2-3 hours and often includes a tour of the campus. The candidate who is selected then meets with the President of the College who then has the ultimate hiring authority.
