Crab Orchard Mountains

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Crab Orchard Mountains are a rugged, detached range of the Cumberland Mountains. They are situated between the Cumberland Plateau, and the Tennessee Valley of Tennessee, mainly in Morgan County and Anderson County in the U.S. state of Tennessee. They comprise the southern end of the Cumberland Mountains. The Crab Orchard Mountains have many peaks over 3,000 ft. the highest being Frozen Head at 3,324 ft., located in Frozen Head State Park. The mountains are made rugged by the erosion of many streams that have cut deep gorges into the mountains. The Crab Orchard Mountains are still one of the most rural areas in all of Appalachia.

Interstate 40 traverses the Crab Orchard Mountains along its southern edge, overlooking the town of Rockwood.
