Coyote Point Park is located in San Mateo County, California. Coyote Point Park is 600 acres (2.4 km²) in area, located on land at the edge of San Francisco Bay, south of San Francisco International Airport,on the border of Burlingame and San Mateo.

[edit] History

Originally Coyote Point (formerly known as San Mateo Point) was an island in San Francisco Bay with a marsh connecting it to the mainland. In the 1800s this marsh was filled in to make lands suitable for dairy farming.

In the early-1900s, the seashore along Coyote was used as an amusement park — "The Coney Island of the West", but this theme park eventually fell into disuse and was dismantled. "Pacific City" closed for good in 1923 after a little more than a year of operations.

Starting in 1942, the area was used as a United States Merchant Marine training school. In 1962, San Mateo County acquired the lands and turned it into a park. The City of San Mateo owns and operates a municipal golf course (Poplar Creek) where the cattle used to graze.

As well as containing recreational amenities for walking, cycling and picnicking, the park contains the Coyote Point Museum for Environmental Education, the Coyote Point Marina and a San Mateo County shooting range. The distinctive point, covered by a grove of eucalyptus trees, can be seen from airplanes approaching the airport (SFO).
