Mike "Cowhead" Calta is an American radio personality. Cowhead began his radio career in 1992 in Tampa Florida working as an intern for Top 40 WFLZ. He is originally from Staten Island, NY. It was at WFLZ that Cowhead joined the Bubba the Love Sponge Show which aired at night on WFLZ. In 1995 The Bubba the Love Sponge Show (featuring Bubba, Gudio, Cowhead, and Flounder) picked up affiliates in Cincinnati (WEBN), Louisville, KY, Atlanta (96 Rock),and Jacksonville (WJBT). In 1996 the show was moved from syndicated nights to local mornings at WXTB (98Rock) in Tampa.

In April of 2000 Cowhead and Bubba had a falling out and Cowhead was fired.

In August of 2000 Cowhead was hired by Infinity Broadcasting by Tom Rivers. He began producing the show known as "The Sport Chix". This show consisted of Original Hooter's Girl and Playboy Playmate Lynn Austin, BL, and Tina. It aired mid days on Sports Radio 1010 The Team (WQYK AM).

Cowhead was moved to mornings at Infinity owned WRBQ and teamed up with new morning man AW Pantoja. This was the idea of Eric Logan ( Now EVP of Programming at XM Satellite Radio). The AW and Cowhead Show aired for one year.

In 2001 Sports Radio 1010 lost it's early mid day show, the syndicated Fabulous Sports Babe. The Show originated from the Infinity Tampa Studios. 1 week before the Super Bowl (which was in Tampa) The Babe was fired by her syndication company leaving a void in the Sports Talk stations line up. Cowhead was thrown into the slot to fill in. He called Brent Pearson, who was recently fired from Clear Channel Sarasota's WYNF, to co-host. Board op Kevin "Mr. Excitement" Wurster and Intern Amy Beckman rounded out the show that became known as "The Replacement Show"It was named this because there was the feeling that "the show would be replaced anyday". The fact was however, that the show became very popular and was moved from early mid days, to afternoons and eventually to mornings. Recognizing that they had a good morning show on a bad signal The Replacement Show became The Cowhead and Brent Show and was moved to Outlaw 92.5 Kick Ass Country, a station created around the new morning show, playing country music aimed at an 18-34 audience. Although the morning show achieved some success and the station became more and more popular, the market became saturated with Country radio stations. Outlaw 92.5 Kick Ass Country became La Nueva 92.5, Tampa 1st Hispanic FM station. When Outlaw 92.5 hired a new GM known for flipping stations to a Spanish format, Cowhead knew his fate. he began tomrenting Infinity management by refusing to speak English during his show for two hours, holding a contest where listeners brought in farm animals, and calling XM Radio's Opie and Anthony Show (who had been fired by Inifnity) and carrying on a 45 minute interview which aired in Tampa and on XM. The next day would be Cowhead's last at Infinity, and he closed the show with O and A's final prhase "your mom's box".

[edit] Recent Events

On January 9, 2006, one of the two, Cowhead, made his return to the air at 98Rock WXTB in Tampa. Brent is now on the night shift of 105.9 The Buzz in Sarasota.

Cowhead and Phatty (aka Spice Boy from the Bubba The Love Sponge Show) were the hosts of "The Cowhead Show" weekday from 6 a.m. till 10 a.m. eastern time. In March, they were suspended pending an internal investigation over alleged indecent comments made on the show. Cowhead, Phatty, and Brian Medlin, the radio station's program director, were fired following the investigation.

Cowhead released a press release via his official Web site stating that the reason he was fired was due to a competitor in the Tampa Bay radio market who edited his bits to make them contain expletives and sent them to WXTB advertisers. In actuality, Cowhead was fired over questionable content in accordance to Clear Channel's "Zero Tolerance" policy. Cowhead's firings have made radio critics consider him to be in the category of shock jocks.

On March 31, 2006, Cowhead was a guest on the Kidd Chris Show in WYSP, Philadelphia explaining the circumstances surrounding his suspension and ultimately his firing. The Cowhead Show [1] website has the interview. He also appeared on the Bubba the Love Sponge Show on Friday, May 5, 2006 to explain his firing.

Most recently, Cowhead has made appearances on Nobody Likes Onions, a popular Internet radio program (podcast) based out of his hometown of Tampa. Cowhead plans on returning to NLO periodically.

On July 2, 2006, All Access reported that Cowhead will be the new morning show host on WHPT-FM (102.5 THE BONE) in Tampa, Florida. The show is set to begin within the week of the announcement. A co-host and actual start date have yet to be determined as of July 4, 2006. An internet stream of Cowhead's show will be available on the official website of 102.5 The Bone. Ironically, this is the same station that was selling against him at 98 Rock, by telling advertisers how awful and dirty his show was!

On July 10, 2006, the new Cowhead show launched with Brent coming back as a co-host and long time friend of Cowhead, Moose finishing up the cast.

Cowhead was a guest of the Bubba the Love Sponge show on Monday September 25, 2006.

October 10, 2006, Brent is fired from the Cowhead show on the air shortly after 6:00 for falling asleep on the air. The firing is replayed at 8:30.

February 9 ,2007 Greg "GALVIN" is hired to join the Cowhead Show. Galvin comes to 102.5 The Bone from 104.3 & 105.1 WLRS in Louisville where he was the morning show host.
