[edit] Plot

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Cowfusion tells the story of John (John Arthur), a young man with an obsession with Cowboys/Westerns.

After a series of ill-fated events, the urn containing ashes from his great, great, great grandfather (a famous Cowboy) drops onto John's head and shatters. After breathing in the ancient ashes, John wakes from a daze, believing he is a real life Cowboy.

After confusing locals with his bizzare behaviour, John comes to the rescue of a girl being harassed by a group of thugs. Roberta (Mia Reakes) discloses that she is on the run from Carlos (Clive Temple), a local kingpin and very bad man to cross. John finds his granpappy's ancient six shooter in the attic and readies himself in Western fashion (drinking whiskey and passing out).

Carlos sends his thugs after John who fends them off with the delusional skills of a Wild west Cowboy. His luck does not hold out forever and John is eventually captured through the trickery of a Russian sniper under Carlos' employ. After brutal torture, he is rescued by his drunkard friend Tim (Mike Dean) in a daring rescue orchestrated by Roberta. John seeks shelter and time to recover in a complex of Sand Dunes (not before getting some medical attention from Roberta).

Infuriated by the lunatic kid running circles around his organisation, Carlos sends his son (Sebastien Perez) after the trio. After an epic shootout on the Dunes, in which Carlos' remaining goons are picked off by John and his make-shift posse, Carlos' son is killed.

Now Carlos is pissed.

With John in bad shape after being injured in the battle with Carlos' son, Carlos himself kidnaps Roberta and blows Mike's leg to pieces in the process, hoping to lure John into a final showdown.

John obliges as only a Western Hero would and faces Carlos one-on-one. Carlos reveals that Roberta is his daughter and not his mistress as John had presumed, but that he intends to kill her anyway... as soon as he is done with the crazy Cowboy. both men fire but it is Carlos left standing as John falls to the ground in a pool of his own blood.

Carlos has Roberta in his sights when John struggles to save her, finally managing to kill Carlos before he can pull the trigger.

As John and Roberta ride off into the sunset, Carlos's gun appears and fires into the air.

Spoilers end here.

[edit] Trivia

  • The Director (J Francis) also plays the lead, John/Cowboy under the alias John Arthur, and edited the film under the alias Elias Kane.
  • Filming took 3 weeks, and due to long shoots nearly everyday, the cast and crew ended up living at the Director's house for most of the shoot.
  • Film was edited on a single home PC, and all sound/music was mixed/created on a Apple G4 iBook.
  • When shown to the public of Jersey at the Jersey Arts Centre, the venue sold out and the bar had its most profitable night of that year.
  • All music was written by Robbie Andrews, who also was the onsite sound technician, played 'Bearded Posse Member' as well as creating all the promotional artwork for the film.
  • When shooting Cowfusion, Mike Dean would get drunk to help him play the part of Tim. A large amount of the budget was spent on Breda Royal Lager, a lager sold only in the Channel Islands and featured a lot during the film (in every scene Tim is in, he is holding at least one can).
  • Clive Temple is the Karate Sensei of J Francis & Robbie Andrews, and had no previous acting experience.
