A cowboy is a North - or Latin American cowherd or other ranch hand, particularly one who works from horseback, or a rodeo performer; by extension applied elsewhere; many equivalent terms exist in various languages, also in the Americas:

  • in card games, especially poker, a king
  • In the UK and New Zealand, cowboy often refers to an unscrupulous or unqualified tradesman.
  • A type of hat, unusually called a Stetson hat
  • During the (American) Revolutionary War, robbers who infested the roads between the American and English forces east of the Hudson River were called cowboys. They pilfered cattle and sometimes other property.
  • Cowboys are a common name or mascot for a sports team, particularly in the Western region of the United States, where cowboys have historical significance.
