Cowan, New South Wales

Cowan is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia.

Eight streets make up the main 'township' of Cowan, and cover an area of no more than one-and-a-half kilometres long by one kilometre wide.

The suburb of Berowra lies to Cowan's south, and the river township of Brooklyn is approximately 6km north-east of Cowan. Cowan shares the same postcode as Berowra, 2081.

Technically, after the river township of Brooklyn, Cowan is the northern-most suburb of Sydney, forming part of the Greater Sydney Metropolitan Area.

[edit] Transport and access

Access via road to Cowan is via the Pacific Highway which traverses Cowan north through south. The Main North Railway Line runs parallel to the Pacific Highway through most of Cowan, and there is a railway station at Cowan served by Cityrail rail services. Most notably, railway signalling facilities are located at Cowan - these facilities include a 24-hour signals office and signalling/track-switching equipment. Electric overhead railway power facilities are located in the north of Cowan. Cowan station receives intercity services to Wyong and Sydney Terminal.

There is a single General Store that serves the Cowan community, this is located on the corner of the Pacific Highway and Fraser Road. Other facilities within Cowan include Cowan Community Hall (a service provided by Hornsby Shire Council), Cowan Park and a small picnic area adjacent to the Fire Station on View Street.

A notable landmark of the Cowan area is the Pie Shop ("Pie In The Sky") located approximately one kilometre north of Cowan on the Pacific Highway. Pie In The Sky featured in the Australian film "Lantana", and is a frequent stop for day-trippers and motorcycle/motor-scooter enthusiasts on most weekends.

Cowan is served by one public primary school (Cowan Public School) which only had 72 students enrolled in 2006. [Three main students who went there last year were Damian Ogle, Mitchell Hodder and Douglas Hodder, who all three currently go to Ku-ring-gai Creative Art High, which according to them, is the next best thing after chocolate, because they have many friends and lots of fun at KCAHS (which spells SHACK the wrong way around)].

The nearest high school is Ku-ring-gai Creative Arts high School [KCAHS].

Fire protection for the entire area of Cowan is provided by the NSW Rural Fire Service, through Cowan Rural Fire Brigade, however, a Mutual Aid Agreement with the NSW Fire Brigades ensures that Station 75 (Berowra) of the NSW Fire Brigades will also respond to any urban fire incidents within Cowan. Cowan Rural Fire Brigade is located at 21 View Street, Cowan.
