Covington Middle School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Covington Middle School is a middle school in Austin, Texas.

[edit] History

Covington Middle School is named for legendary band directors, Verna and Weldon Covington. Weldon Covington was the fine arts director of the Austin Independent School District in the 1950s-1970s. He met young Verna, a student out of The University of Texas School of Music, who had aspirations to be a band director. Weldon happily accepted her offer to become a band director, thus making Verna Covington the first female band director in Texas.

[edit] Today

Covington Middle School's Band program, including their premiere performance group, the Covington Symphonic Winds, have become a nationally recognized group of performers, who have performed at such events as the Western International Band Clinic in Seattle, Washington (2005), and the Benjamin Franklin Tercentennial Celebration/Armed Forces Remembrance in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C., respectively (2006). They have received countless commendations from world-renowned band clinicians and directors, such as Anthony Maiello, the professor of musical studies at George Mason University. The Covington Middle School Band is currently lead by Cathy Humphrey and Ruth Lim.
