Coutts (disambiguation)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term Coutts is most associated with the private bank of the same name.
Other spellings of the surname include Coates, Cootes and Coutes. There is also some association with the surname Colt (of Samuel Colt fame).
The surname is said to be Pictish in origin (Family Heritage International, 1989), and simply means those that live near the coots, a type of waterfowl.
The family motto is In utraque fortuna paratus (meaning I prosper both ways). The most ancient coat of arms granted is (on a silver background) a red stag's head with a blue arrowhead between the antlers.
