County Road 509 (Brevard County, Florida)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Extending 19 miles in Palm Bay, June Park, West Melbourne, Melbourne, Palm Shores, Pineda, and Suntree, Brevard County Road 509 is a major north-south throughway in southeastern Brevard County, Florida. North of New Haven Avenue (US 192-SR 600) in West Melbourne, CR 509 is known locally as Wickham Road; south of the US highway, its street name is Minton Road (in the 1980s and 1990s, this 5.6-mile-long section of current CR 509 was signed by Florida Department of Transportation as State Road 509).

The current southern terminus of Brevard County Road 509 is an intersection with Malabar Road (Brevard County Road 514, a westward extension of State Road 514); the northern terminus is an interchange with Interstate 95 (SR 9) in the midst of Pineda, Suntree, and Viera (Pineda and Suntree on the eastern side of I-95, Viera on the western side), although it extends 2 more miles through southern Viera, with the intersections of Stadium Parkway and Lake Andrew Drive. The "true" northern terminus of Wickham Road is the South Central Regional Wastwater Treatment Plant just after the power lines.

County Road 509 passes by two air fields - Melbourne International Airport (in Melbourne, accessed via NASA Boulevard/SR 508) and the US Air Force Eastern Test Range Malabar Annex (in Palm Bay), Melbourne Greyhound Park (in Melbourne), Wickham Park (accessed via Parkway Drive in Melbourne), and, at the northern terminus of CR 509 in Suntree, the Brevard Zoo. Wickham Road also supplies the primary connection between I-95 and the Pineda Causeway (SR 404), which itself is a major access road for both Patrick Air Force Base and Satellite Beach.
