Counting Thoughts Ltd is a scientific consultancy that develops software for teaching and research. The company is based in Glasgow, Scotland, and was founded in 2003 by astronomy lecturer Dr Andrew Conway, cosmologist and mathematician Dr Aidan Keane and renewable energy consultant Dr Peter Clive.
Their educational software products include SURE Q, an ICT tool for formative assessment and revision, for which content covering the curricula for GCSE Maths, GCSE Physics (UK), Higher Maths (Scotland), Higher Physics (Scotland) and Higher Biology (Scotland) is available. In addition the simulation package SURE HigherPhysics supports the Scottish Higher Physics curriculum with varied interactive elements. The decision to use simulations rather than animations to illustrate physical principles was based on a desire to enable the user to experiment using the software rather than be restricted to demonstrations by it.
Counting Thoughts have led a number of educational initiatives, including the "Weigh the World" challenge in which school pupils were involved in an experiment inspired by the famous 1774 Schiehallion experiment of Nevil Maskelyne, during which the mass of the Earth was measured for the first time. This initiative attracted worldwide attention and was the subject of some media coverage including the BBC and the Discovery channel.
