Count of Vidigueira

The earldom of Vidigueira was created on favour of Dom Vasco da Gama on 1499, december 29, forever on his legal descent by Dom Manuel I, King of Portugal, to honour his memory. Later on, the elder branch of the Gama family, the counts of Vidigueira, also bearing since 1499 on an hereditary basis the title of Admiral's of the Indian Ocean, were raised to the title of Marchionesses of Nisa by John IV, King of Portugal, in 1646, october the 8th.
