Cotacachi

Cotacachi is a canton of Imbabura province of Ecuador. Ascendant Corporation plans to raze to the ground the villages of Junin, Cerro Pelado and El Triunfon order to make ground for copper mining. Pachakutik, a party of the indigenuous population gained 4 of 5 seats in the area at the 2004 local elections. Activists of environmental protection have mentioned death threats by the Ascendant Corporation. In 2000 Cotacachi was declared the first ecological county of South America.
