Talk:Cory Lidle
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
[edit] Who was at the Controls?
The plane Lidle was in had two sets of controls. Therefore, no one at the moment can say for sure who was flying the plane at impact or at any other time of the flight. This may be determined after an NTSB investigation, but that's months away. I'm therefore changing any wording that says Lidle was piloting or at the conrols and the like to reflect the fact that it's unknown. --Spiff666 14:13, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

Please Remove the Controversies. I know it may seem odd but it wasn't even a large deal. Many players have this after they leave a team includng Abreu, Alex Rodriguez and more.

Seriously - "FBI Believes" is not the same thing as a confirmation. As of yet, I haven't seen any real confirmation that he's dead. Just because ESPN or Fox News says he's dead doesn't mean he is. They have no source of confirmation. It's poor journalism, giving a definitive answer with nothing to back it up.
- They found his passport on the ground! I don't think he dropped it from his pocket walking down the street as a plane which just happened to be registered to him crashes into an apartment. --CFIF ☎ ⋐ 22:10, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
-
- What if someone else was using his plane and his passport was just in the plane? He is very likely dead, but without true confirmation I think people are irresponsibly jumping to conclusions.
This might help make sense out of why the sources have been so confused. WEEI (a sports radio station in Boston) reported tonight that at the time of the accident his wife and son were on a commercial flight heading to California and could not be reached. Presumably, official sources were trying to reach his family to tell them directly, so they didn't hear this on the news, but rumors got out of hand. Rickterp 02:55, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Terrorism / Accident?
"Cory Lidle died October 11th 2006 when his plane crashed into a residential building in New York. Initial speculation regarding the place crash included the cause being terrorism, rather than an accident."
All the major news stations are reporting it as an accident, NOT terrorism. An FBI spokeswoman also said there is no indication of terrorism. The sentence should be changed. MonkBirdDuke 21:06, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
For obvious reasons the first guess on the crash was terrorism, but I think that's out the window if you confirm it's Lidle. (Expect a bunch of unsourced speculation about suicide soon.) Fan-1967 21:08, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Why is the page locked? It's confirmed that Lidle has died.
- The page is semiprotected right now because, unfortunately, a current event like this triggers a high rate of anonymous vandalism. This is regrettable for good-faith new editors who want to contribute to the article, but there is too much bad experience with leaving pages like this unprotected. Newyorkbrad 21:47, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Airplane photo
The plane in the photo with him is not the plane involved in the crash (Cirrus 20). This one looks like a Cessna, maybe. It definitely isn't the plane in the crash, as that plane has a low wing (http://www.answers.com/topic/cirrus-sr20) and the plane in the photo has a high wing. Unless he owns two planes, or previously owned the one in the photo, it is questionable whether the plane in the photo is "his plane." Even if it is/was, it might be helpful to clarify that it was not the plane in the crash. Thanks.

"Yankee Cory Lidle on NYC plane; 2 killed, Associated Press, accessed October 11, 2006". The headline now says "Yankee Cory Lidle presumed 1 of 2 killed". There is still no real confirmation he's dead.

Why was it taken out in the first place? I added it when I saw Clemente in there, then it got the hook for "already being mentioned," even though Munson's probably more relevant to Lidle than Clemente. Drjayphd 08:09, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Bloomburg
I believe that continuing to add minute details from the mayor's press conference is silly and amatuerish. His press conference is already forgotten so I see no need to include it. It gives the article the feel of a tabloid website or someone's personal blog or myspace page.--Kester Teague 22:57, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Listing in Category:Accidental suicide victims?
That seems dubious to me. Is there a source that would say that his death was accidental? I'd think if somebody crashed a plane into a building, then it would have had to have been deliberate. ESPN said that Lidle had been flying a plane a lot in the last several years; that sounds like he knew what he was doing. --Idont Havaname (Talk) 23:03, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- He started flying relatively recently, see this article, and reportedly called in a fuel emergency shortly before crashing. Newyorkbrad 23:09, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
-
- I highley doubt that this was a "Suicide" in the common thought of the word. Accidental Suicide, possibly. But recent reports say that we do not know who had the controls at time of impact(Lidle or the flight instructor on board). What we do know is that Lidle has had his pilot liscense for 7 months.
-
-
- While I originally thought it could be termed an accidental suicide if he were flying the plane I'm not so sure now. The accidental suicide category only has like 8 people in it. Most either shot themselves somehow or other or killed themselves from autoerotic asphyixation. One blew himself up while makinga bomb. When someone puts a gun to their head and pulls the trigger (or something similar) I guess it's fairly easy to say it's an accidental sucide. But when it's an accident like this, I'm not so sure. Let me give another example. if someone were to be killed in a car accident and they were driving and the accident were completely their fault (e.g. they fell asleep and rammed into a truck, were drunk and similar, ran a red light, whatever) would you call it an accidental sucide? I wouldn't... This is actually quite complicated. If someone takes the wrong pills for example (and it's completely their fault) would you call it an accidental suicide? [edit] Suicide?
Suicide is certainly a possibility, though it is too soon to put it in that category. He has a history of mercurial mouthing off (expunged from the article by somebody), so it occurred to me that he might have been having emotional problems. Stuff happens and power loss during flight is extremely difficult for any pilot, but it is bad piloting to crash into the side of a building instead of gliding to Central Park or the water. Also, he had his passport with him. What's up with that? Hu 23:25, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- It is possible he was on his way to Florida for the offseason, though no flight plan was filed. He would of had to make stops en route to Florida. Now on espn they say he may have been taking a multi stop flight to California. Sjt81 23:32, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- Last I heard neither California nor Florida required passports. However, he could have been flying by airliner from there to a foreign country. NPR just reported that there were two people on board the plane, which argues against a suicide. Hu 23:35, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
-
- As a Major Leauge Baseball Player he may always have his passport with him. ESPN just announced the passport was found in a bag.Sjt81 23:39, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
-
-
- Going theory is he was cleaning his stuff out of his locker. I'm pretty sure the team itself keeps players' passports handy. It would be unwieldy for each player to have to remember to take theirs. "Oh, I forgot mine" and the like. 24.228.54.78 00:47, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
-
Unlikely...he had hotel reservations for later on and someone else was in the plane with him. Thunderbunny 05:24, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
Neither CNN, NY Times, or MLB.com is saying it was suicide, so unless there is another source sayng it was, it would probably be best to assume an accident for now. Grand Slam 7 12:10, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- It is sufficient just to say they are dead and that there was a crash. NTSB is there to determine if it was an accident, the cause i.e. mechanical or human. Any further is NOT encycopedic. Chivista 13:08, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
-
- Suicide might be a theory if he had been alone in the plane, but seems pretty implausible with a flight instructor in the other seat. Fan-1967 14:40, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
"On Wednesday 11th October Cory crashed his plane into a tower block in New York killing himself and his flying instructor." This line seems to imply - to me - that Lidle committed suicide (which, at this point, is wrong). I just think the line needs to be a little more clear. [edit] Controversy section
I removed it. Undue weight was being given to a minor spat. Elliskev 23:07, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- I agree with the removal.--Kester Teague 23:07, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- The particular spat with the Phillies just after a trade was minor. The broader controversy about his having been a replacement player in 1995 was somewhat more significant and may be worth mentioning; cf., for example, Rick Reed. But this isn't the time to worry about it. Newyorkbrad 23:23, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- Minor?? it was talked about for weeks on sports radio, it should be put back. Only reason it was removed is because he died and people only want to speak good of the dead, how about we speak the truth insteadKrawhitham 07:08, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

- Just for reference, ESPN has reported that the family has been notified by authorities, and Cory Lidle's brother was on Larry King Live. His wallet was found on a 4th floor ledge, and his body has been recovered. This is no longer speculation. He was on his way home to California, and was scheduled to stop in Tennessee tonight.Sjt81 03:02, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Lidle's constant reassignments.....
Anyone know the reason why Lidle was shipped around from team to team?....he averaged more than one team per year. Was he disagreeable? Or was it his performance?
- Not sure, although he was known to have a mercurial temperment and his being a replacement player in 1994 may not have made him the most popular person around the clubhouse. JYolkowski // talk 02:36, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- Lidle was one of those serviceable, back of the starting rotation kind of pitchers. Guys like that usually don't get long-term contracts and often play for many teams over the course of their careers. Lidle did OK for himself, though, his career won-loss record was a very respectable 82-72. Outtaherephils 02:43, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- He was never "the" guy for a team. He was a Pitcher that had value, teams would pick him up, but he wasn't the type of guy you give a 5 year deal too.Sjt81 03:02, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- Eh, it happens in modern baseball even to the best liked guys. It would actually just be unusual if he'd just been with one team for his entire career. --Ed Word 16:31, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
The image was created the plane hitted 19th floor on the bourder of Manhattan and Queens in the main New agencies and only later it was changed into 40th (the first image was huge, coreection -neglibble). We understand, what could mean 19th after 11 09 2001

There is another pilot in the main cabin, where the players sit. [edit] Death Section.
I took that block of information that seemed to be accidentally placed in the "See Also" section into the "Death" section. This section will probably need some cleaning up and some more re-organization to reduce redundancy and improve clarity. Thanks. --joeinthebox 18:57, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] The Flight Instructor
The article has conflicting spellings of the name of the Flight instructor. Is he Tyler Stanger or Tyler Stranger? Jamesino 22:52, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- Stanger is how ESPN is pronouncing itSjt81 23:22, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- I think we should unify the article so that there is only one spelling of his name instead of two. Jamesino 23:25, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- agreed, Stanger is used in the main article on the Crash, and thus I replaced all instances of "Stranger" with "Stanger"Sjt81 23:34, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Life Insurance
What does everyone else think about the inclusion of information from the following news article into either this article or the actual event's article? I am pretty neutral on it, but I came across the article and thought I'd put it up for debate. [4] Stoneice02 03:59, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- Since it's apparently being written about by the AP I don't see why we couldn't mention it. But should we? Since it's just speculation right now (if he was the pilot, his family might not get the benefit), I say we wait until more is known. Who really wants to read an article that's all speculation, even if it's well-referenced speculation? --Ed Word 14:02, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Who Exactly Was the Flight Instructor?
There is a difference between the account of the crash on this page and the Wikinews article which names the flight instructor as Robert Paulson. Is Wikinews wrong or is it Wikipedia? [1]
- I think someone was having a little fun with the Wikipedia page. Robert Paulson is a fictional character in the film Fight Club. I changed it back to what all the news reports are still stating: Tyler Stanger.--71.156.62.61 17:56, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A-Rod accident
I edited someone else's entry about yesterday's A-Rod plane accident to remove some extraneous POV material - but I question whether this paragraph should be in the article at all. Yes, it is an eerie coincidence but is it really appropriate for a page about Cory Lidle? Tvoz 04:14, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
- The news media seem to be playing up the coincidental connection. Wahkeenah 04:50, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
-
- Yeah, that's why I didn't remove it - but still it seems kind of inappropriate on a page about Lidle - it should be about him, his career, and of course his death, not conspiracy theories and screwball ideas about upsidedown dates. I suppose the A-rod story isn't quite that so I left it up, but did want to get the sense of others here. No big deal either way. Tvoz 05:43, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
- Conspiracy theory? That would be a major stretch, but there's no accounting for paranoia. It's a strange coincidence that, at least for the moment, deserves a mention, but should be downplayed as just that and nothing more, given the lack of any evidence to the contrary. The media, of course, like to make connections. If it weren't for the Lidle story, the A-Rod story would come and go much more quickly, as there were no casualties. Wahkeenah 07:17, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

Is there any quote from Arthur Rhodes after Cory Lidle passed away. Keep in mind Arthur Rhodes is the individual who is quoted as calling Cory Lidle a 'scab' and a 'replacement player.
