Talk:Correllian Nativist Church

I recommend this article be locked for a month to allow some cooling off. Things are heating up at present. Vaughanwj
I agree. In fact, it probably ought to be locked until such time as it is determined which body - the family who started the tradition, or the Incorporation who now claims ownership of it - will be given rights to the Tradition. At the moment, this hasn't gone to court, but is most likely will. 71.72.199.25 21:34, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
I am still learning this system, so I hope I am not overstepping any bounds. But IF the "Rev Halstead" is the same William Halstead of or formerly of the Southern Colorado Witches yahoo group of a few years ago, he is a known plagiarist from when he stole and republished an article which had been published on Themestream before the website's eventual demise. He apparently claimed that someone else, his life partner at the time, had used his account. The controversy got quite nasty on Themestream. He is now a provisional clergy member of the Correllians, which is kind of ironic as Ed Hubbard, current president of Witch School (yielding the title to Don Lewis according to http://www.prweb.com/releases/2006/10/prweb445171.htm# and now listed as a 43-year-old elder of the Correllian Tradition, had said years ago that Halstead was infringing upon the Witch School website's copyright. Perhaps they worked that all out, in light of his now being clergy with them. However, that does not erase his questionable actions in plagiarising someone else's works and posting them as his own. As far as all the he said, she said, when someone gets around to documenting the so-called schism, this might be of help http://www.astrallight.org/Correllian/Announcements.html has the Albany, NY organization's take on things with a 10-page letter to "members". [edit] Needs Update in Light of Current Changes
There is a division presently occuring, between the Correllian Nativist Tradition, the family tradition headed by Rev. Don Lewis High-Correll, and the Correllian Nativist Church Incorporated, the 501c3/incorporated body run by Rev. Davron Michaels.
The most logical course of action would be to delete the entry entirely, and allow each body to enter appropriate articles (or not) as they see fit.

It would be a shame if there is truly a schism taking palce. Many people have a hard time finding places or groups to study Wicca with. The Correllians were one of the relatively few ways to do that, especially in places where Wiccans have to be in the "broom closet." I hope that this can be resolved peacefully as Don Lewis and Davron have both been mentors of mine. Other Traditions have split (consider Gardnerian into Alexandiran) with both sects doing well after the split. I hope the Correllians can do the same! Rev. William Halstead of the Circle of the Mountain Fire

- Thanks for your input, Rev. Halstead.
- Let me invite you to do two things:
- 1/ Keep an eye on this article for factual errors or POV insertions, which are likely to occur as this division develops. If you know the leaders, you're in a good position to watch for such things.
- 2/ Create an account. This will allow you to sign your posts

- A schism. Oy.
- I hope neither side gets to see this article until the schism is well and truly resolved and has been appropriately documented. Otherwise, we could see edit wars aplenty.
- In the meantime, though, I'd vote for leaving the article as it is; better some information than none. When the schism is resolved (however that may come about), then we can see about creating two separate articles.

- Agreed... AFAIK, I'm the only person from either side who frequents Wikipedia (though I was not responsible for creating this article)but given that this schism (good word!) is likely to turn nasty over the next year, I hope no one with a strong interest either way finds the article yet.

- Do you have an account? There are advantages to having one.
- Don't worry about someone with a strong point of view finding the page; if someone strays outside the guidelines for Wikipedia, the bias will be corrected.

It Begins I saw changes today that appear to indicate an attempt by a member of one branch of the schism to eliminate references to the other branch of the schism. I've tried to clean this up, but I don't know the players well enough to be sure I've done it well. I hope other Wikipedians will stay on top of this with me. I'm tempted to add a {{current event}} tag to this. Feedback? Septegram 14:47, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
Unfortunately, Davron Michaels has been 'warlocked' - officially removed from the Tradition's records and rosters. The tradition has always been and is still a family-based tradition with Rev. Don Lewis High-Correll as its head; the Church was a branch under the Tradition. However, with the recent actions against Davron, his 'Church' is also considered to no longer be a Correllian body, though it may have the name and its members may certainly still be Correllians.
Of course, the Church sees it differently, refuses to recognize the family as having further authority in Correllian matters, refuses to recognize Rev. Don's authority, and is claiming it has full legal claim to all matters Correllian - which is a bit amusing, considering that the entire body of written work is held under a copyright of Rev. Don's.
From a neutral point of view, there ought to be two separate articles, as these two groups are, in most ways now, two separate belief systems. That they share a name is, most likely, a temporary issue at best; Davron has been favoring 'Aeon Church' for some time, and if he cannot legally steel Rev. Don's family name, he'll likely go for this. As for differences in beliefs, one of the fundamental events that has cemented the schism is Davron's acceptance and open support of Satanism, which the Correllian tradition has always eschewed, since the Satanic credo is almost in direct opposition of the Correllian Manifesto. Certainly, Davron has the right to do whatever he pleases; but to use his church authority and status, thus 'officially' supporting Satanism, was wrong and was one of the primary causes of his expulsion from the Tradition.

This article reads like a press release for the Corellians, and probably is, given that the "Discussion" page contains the same text as the first section of the article itself.
I'm tempted to delete it for that reason, but it should probably just get reworked to within an inch of its metaphorical life. Septegram 16:28, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
- I deleted the duplicate copy from the Talk page--don't know why I didn't before.

[edit] Rebuttal
The reason that it reads like the Correllian Web site, is that the information came from that site.
- My point exactly. That's not at all how Wikipedia is supposed to work.

[edit] Neutrality
I added the Neutrality Dispute tag because the lanugage of the author suggests that they're overly opinionated concerning the validity of the Correllian Nativist Church as a "respectable" Wiccan Tradition.

[edit] Editing
Replaced “originating in Hoopeston” with “originating in the Danville area”. Added “central location in Hoopeston, Illinois”.
Added source for citation as to when the Tradition was founded.
Added “Claim to Wicca” paragraph; neutralizes bias on the article page itself.
Removed the part about “Web presence”; replaced with more specific information -- that the Heads of the Tradition declared it public in 1979 after they were elected.
Changed “study circles to full covens” to suit their terminology: Shrines and Temples. Also changed the date, to keep with present information, as they recently (July 2006) have another independently incorporated Temple.
Added “non profit organization” with internal Wiki-link.
Added Wiki-links for countries.
Took out “some Wiccan traditions will only provide teaching in person” as that does not pertain directly to the article. Also, “the Correllian Nativist tradition is taking wicca to the next level of learning via the internet”, is irrelevant; thus, edited out. In their place I put facts -- that study groups/shrines/temples are available for in-person studying, and that they use Witch School (a completely separate entity) as a teaching tool.
Added source information.

[edit] Moved to main article
After asking Jkelly, "when" it would be appropriate, and receiving her reply to "be bold", I moved my revisions to the main article.
