[edit] From the Cornell talk page

Another idea for information would be Cornelliana such as traditions, legends, etc... Before adding it to the main page, I would like to brainstorm various items, feel free to add more or crossout. Let's see:

Traditions

  • Primal Yell (to mark the end of Study Week and the start of Finals Week)

Legends

Lore

  • The Brain Collection
  • Who is buried within Sage Chapel?
  • The 1979 Grateful Dead Concert
  • Library possessing the only privately owned copy of the Gettysburg Address on public display thanks to AD White

Dragon Day and Touchdown are the only ones I'd identify as encyclopedic, at least in the main article, adding the chimes, "Davy" and the alma mater, and perhaps a mention of some hockey and football traditions. Over the longer term, Spring Day and the Phi Psi 500 were bigger and for longer than Slope Day for instance. For another example, the Primal Scream was revived my freshman fall semester, and I don't know why it should trump HEC, campus dogs, student-elected trustees, the Last Lecture, freshman beanies, the mud rushes, the toboggan run, Victory Club... Heck, we don't even mention the Sun, the Widow, or the Cornellian.
I searched the internet. What is "the Last Lecture"?--Xtreambar 18:29, 22 May 2005 (UTC)
It's described briefly at the beginning of this [1] example of a "Last Lecture". In short, it's an annual lecture series in which professors are prompted to teach a lecture as if it were their last. Kime1R 23:14, 24 May 2005 (UTC)
I would like to add a section for university history, however, touching on significant episodes such as the Fiske-Sage library fight, Sage College and changes in sexual regulation post-Malott, "Red Cornell," the Straight Takeover, and mention of the endowment campaign under Rhodes. - choster 04:25, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)
How about a separate Cornelliana article? --Xtreambar 04:49, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I would say that unless the Cornelliana starts to overwhelm the other content, then it can stay in the main article. It's much easier to add the content now and reorganize later if necessary than to spend too much time worrying about how to organize content that hasn't been written yet. It's the way of the wiki. Does anyone else feel that the Cornelliana section has become a bit long and could be moved to its own separate article? --Xtreambar 23:33, 8 September 2005 (UTC)

Move --Xtreambar 23:33, 8 September 2005 (UTC) Just be bold and move it. JDoorjam 01:38, 9 September 2005 (UTC)

Well, 5 months on from my previous comment on the topic, the Cornelliana section now takes up about half the TOC and I daresay can be safely moved to its own article. Nohat 02:29, 9 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Tobaggan slide

Xtreambar, the picture of the Tabaggan slide is really interesting. I was hoping you could point me to more information about it? I assume you were planning to write a section on the slide; I'd like to find out more about it. btm 09:04, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

Yes. It's on the to do list. Currently, I am bogged down with finals and other pressing matters and so, that must be put off till a later time. --Xtreambar 12:38, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
Ok cool. If you could post your resources (Web sites, books, or whatever else) on this topic here, once you have more time, that'd be really great. Good luck with the rest of finals. btm 06:03, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Gorging out

If verifiable information can be found, information should be added on "gorging out" (committing suicide by jumping into Cascadilla Gorge). Gotta take the bad with the good. Angr/talk 16:09, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

I don't think this qualifies as Cornelliana. -Mercuryboard 23:58, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
Even the U. thinks it does: [2]—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Carlossuarez46 (talkcontribs).
Strictly speaking, it's not the "U" that thinks it. It's from a dictionary of Ithaca speak assembled by a class for a course project. If it can be verified to be in popular usage, then perhaps it's suitable for a section on Cornell slang. I've used the term myself, but I had thought it to be of my own invention (coincidentally I matriculated in 1997, which is when the student who wrote the above entry, first heard the term). The statistic cited in the etymology section is rather dubious, but characteristic of the urban legends surrounding Cornell, so would seem to satisfy the "lore" subcategory of Cornelliana. --Chan-Ho (Talk) 01:15, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
I don't think it warrants mention. Just finished my freshmen year, never heard the term once. -mercuryboardtalk 01:18, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
What about a section on urban legends like the suicide rate thing? There used to be such a section in Cornell University, but got lost in the move to separate articles, I think. It might be good to debunk that info, as people still fall for it. I was slightly amused to see that Carlossuarez46 went and and made this edit. --Chan-Ho (Talk) 01:28, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
I am glad that you're amused; I have heard the term used in California by Ivy Leaguers discussing the (consquences of) pressures at such prestigious institutions. Carlossuarez46 17:01, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
For interested parties, here's an old version of the Cornell page that contains the suicide subsection. --Chan-Ho (Talk) 01:37, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
