Cortaca Jug

The Cortaca Jug is the trophy given to the annual College football game played between the Red Dragons of the State University of New York at Cortland and the Bombers of Ithaca College. The matchup is one of the most prominent in Division III football.

The name is put together from the names of the two schools. The "cort" part coming from SUNY Cortland and the "aca" part coming from Ithaca College. The schools are 21 miles apart in the eastern end of the Finger Lakes region of New York

[edit] History of the trophy

2005 was the 64th game in the rivalry. The Cortaca Jug was introduced to the already competitive rivalry in 1959 by the captains of the two teams. Team captains Dick Carmean from Ithaca and Tom Decker of Cortland joined to donate a traveling trophy, named the Cortaca Jug, to be presented to the winning team each year. The first game was in 1930, and the schools have played each other every year since 1948. Since 1948, the games in even numbered years have been played in Cortland.

The game is known as the "Biggest little football game in the nation". The limited capacity of each stadium is augemented by fans standing around the track. The fans of the game have been known to drink heavily and enjoy themselves. There were 6 arrests after the 2000 game.

The 2005 game was the first overtime game in the history of the rivalry with Cortland winning 37-30. As of the start of the 2006 season, Ithaca leads the overall rivalry 36-24-3. The schools met a second time in 1988 at Ithaca, where the Bombers won a playoff game 24-17.
