Corel PHOTO-PAINT is a raster graphics editor sold by Corel, a software company with headquarters in Canada. PHOTO-PAINT does not have a large market share but is comparable with Photoshop in terms of its features. While most versions of PHOTO-PAINT had many features found in Photoshop at the time, PHOTO-PAINT also included some other features as of then not found in Photoshop, including multiple undos and text on a curve.

The current version is Corel PHOTO-PAINT X3 (13). It is not sold by itself, but instead included with CorelDRAW (CorelDRAW Graphics Suite). Its main uses are image manipulation and creation of web graphics. As of version 11, Corel increasingly gave attention to the PC photography user; support for the Windows Image Acquisition-interface and Exif was introduced then, as was a Red Eye Removal Tool. The latest version available for Macintosh is version 11. Version 9 was also made available for Linux, however it was less of an actual port as it depended on Wine to run. It was released as freeware and could be downloaded directly from Corel's website, although CorelDRAW 9 for Linux was not freeware.

[edit] Proprietary file format CPT

Corel PHOTO-PAINT offers the proprietary file format CPT with the extension .cpt. Up to version 6 this is practically nothing else but a TIFF file. With higher versions these files can only be viewed, converted and edited with Corel software.

The file version can be found out by opening the file in a text or hex-editor. Eg., with version 9 the term CPT9FILE can be found in the first or second line.
