[edit] History

Coral Springs High School (CSHS) first opened its doors in 1975 with Mr. Paul Proffitt as Principal. Mr. Proffitt participated in the original planning of the high school - started in 1972 - and hand-picked the administration and teachers who would guide the school to become one of the largest in Northern Broward County during the 1980's. At that time, the City of Coral Springs grew to become more than just 'The City in the Country', eventually becoming one of the largest medium-sized cities in the State of Florida in terms of population.

Coral Springs High School was the city's first high school. The school originally opened at a different location as a collection of portable classrooms with a student population of some 1,200 students. In 1976, the main building opened at its current location. By the 1980-1981 school year, CSHS was organized into double sessions to accommodate 3,764 students. By the fall of 1981, a second high school - J. P. Taravella High School - was opened, thereby stabilizing the student population down to 2,400 students.

Academically, CSHS excelled among all secondary schools in the state. By 1984, a state Education Committee had selected CSHS as one of the top seven secondary schools in Florida. By then, over 80% of all graduating seniors attended college. And at that time, CSHS accommodated over 3,000 students between the main campus and some 47 portable classrooms. The school boasted many National Merit Scholars, as well as teachers who were recognized state wide - and nationally - as some of the best in their profession.

Athletically, CSHS won the All County Sports Trophy for four consecutive years in the early 1980s. In 1979, the Girls Soccer Team won the state title. After the first 10 years of existence, some 111 trophies had filled the school's trophy cases for individual and team excellence.

Principal Proffitt attended his last graduation ceremony with the Class of 1987 on June 11, 1987 at the Sunrise Musical Theater. Mr. Proffitt died in 1991 at the age of 68.

Taking the reins of CSHS in the fall of 1987 was Mr. Bruce Wagar.

[edit] History

The Coral Springs High School Marching Colts was, originally, a traditional marching band. Their uniforms were classic cadet style kelly green and white jackets with royal blue piping, white pants with a kelly green stripe, cadet hat and white shoes. They would march single file into each football game and were accompanied by devoted band parents. They marched traditional glide and high step. The Marching Colts attended a week long band camp held at the College of Boca Raton (now Lynn University) where they would practice marching and music. By the end of that week they would perform their first half time show of the season.

By 1987 membership had grown to 288 members and they had three field drum majors. They were a performance only band under the direction of Mr. Duane Hendon (member of the FBA Hall of Fame for outstanding band directors)(www.flmusiced.org/fba). Under Mr. Hendon - starting in 1976 - the Marching Colts would consistently rate straight superior ratings at the FBA Marching Evaluation ("Contest") each year while their drum majors rated Grand Champions at Drum Major Camp. The Marching Colts also included a drill team, rifle corps and a flag auxilary.

Under Mr. Hendon's direction, the Marching Colts would perform three different half time shows a year and were invited to numerous parades and events, including the Coral Springs Our Town Parade, several Orange Bowl Parades, several Miami Dolphins half time shows including among others the 1984 AFC Championship Game between the Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers and a 1985 AFC Divisional Playoff Game between the Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns. The Marching Colts were also featured on Bob Hope's Christmas special of 1987, and were the only high school band that was asked to represent the state of Florida in 1986 in Philadelphia for the Celebration of the signing of the US Constitution and performed on the steps of the US Capitol Building.
