It's obvious why 143 would be used as shorthand for "I love you" in instant messenger and that kind of thing (seems kinda soulless to me, but that's the opinion of an old man).

What we still don't have is a proper academic citation. Does there exist a book about Internet slang (maybe Dictionary of Internet Slang), published by a reputable author, listed in the Library of Congress that supports this about 143? PrimeFan 21:57, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
