Nieuwenhuys was most renown for his life-long project of a utopian city he called "New Babylon". He started working on the idea while being active in the revolutionary Situationist International group together with Guy Debord in the late 50's in Paris. While he left the group because of ideological disagreements with Debord he kept on developing his project up to his death.
