Conwyn Mansel-Jones

Conwyn Mansel-Jones (VC, CMG, DSO)(14 June 1871- 29 May 1942) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

He was 28 years old, and a Captain in The West Yorkshire Regiment (The Prince of Wales's Own), British Army during the South African War (Boer War) when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.

On 27 February 1900 north of Tugela, Natal, South Africa, the companies of The West Yorkshire Regiment met with severe shell and rifle fire on the northern slope of Terrace Hill and their advance was temporarily checked. Captain Mansel-Jones, however, by his strong initiative and example restored confidence and in spite of his falling very seriously wounded, the men took the whole ridge without further check.
