Phase diagrams are not informative with respect to phase transformation rates in multiphase alloys.

Thus we have an axis of time encorporated into this type of diagram, because often it takes an unimaginably long time to reach the equilibrium states shown in phase diagrams.

Since most heat treatments for steels require continuous cooling of a specimen at room temperature, rather than isothermal transformations of constant temperatures, these diagrams are modified isothermal transformations with delayed times required for reactions to start and end.
