The Confederation of Malta Trade Unions (CMTU) is a national trade union center in Malta. It has a membership of 36,000.
Although the CMTU has no political alignment it has been seen as the choice of those who reject the General Workers' Union which is held to be close to the Malta Labour Party due to its clear left-wing position in the trade union movement. On the other hand the CMTU gained several members supporting the Nationalist Party during the polarised political days of the 1980's when main political leaders encouraged membership in respective trade unions.
The CMTU is affiliated with the International Trade Union Confederation. It includes a cross section of large and smaller trade unions namely the Union Haddiema Maghqudin, the Malta Union of Bank Employees and the Malta Union of Teachers.
