Coney Island Hospital

Coney Island Hospital is located in Brooklyn, New York City.
The hospital was founded in the late 19th century as a first-aid station to serve summer beach goers. It was established on its current site in 1909, and has since grown into a multi-site community medical center serving many ethnic neighborhoods.
It is the largest medical facility in the southern Brooklyn area, serves a diversified cultural and a large geriatric population. The hospital which as recently as 2000 had 410 beds now has been reduced to 365 (2006) and will be further reduced to 310 beds in 2007. Coney Island hospital Inpatient has and an extensive ambulatory care program, which includes a hospital-based Primary Care Center and an outreach site at the Community Health Center in Coney Island. Its newly built tower section includes state of the art facilities in Critical care, Medical surgical care,a new cardiac catheter lab, and labor and delivery department. The Hammit Pavilon which housed the pychiatric health ward is being torn down and replaced with a state of the art operating room and emergency room to be completed by 2010. In terms of nursing Coney Island hospital is relatively unique in that it does not employ agency nurses from outside of the hospital nor does it offer overtime to its nurses, instead it has a "float team" to handle any sections that are short staffed. The hospital provides a full range of general and specialty ambulatory care services, as well as full emergency services and inpatient services. It recently underwent a massive renovation and its main building which was built in 1954 is being converted to house the behavioral health division of the hospital as well as administrative offices.
