Concord Mills Mall is a 1.4 million square foot shopping mall located in Concord, North Carolina, a suburb of Charlotte. The mall is in Cabarrus County, just a few hundred feet from the Mecklenburg County border, and about 25 miles from downtown Charlotte. It is operated by the Mills Corporation, which has just recently been sold to The Simon Group which also owns Southpark Mall, and is the third largest shopping mall in North Carolina, the largest being Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem, and second largest being Charlotte's SouthPark Mall. It is North Carolina's largest tourist attraction, attracting over 15 million visitors a year. The mall is located about a mile from Lowe's Motor Speedway.

[edit] Anchors & Majors

Your Dollar Store is about to be closed. There is also a rumor that with the new management of the company, The Simon Group, NASCAR Speedpark will also be closed within the year.

[edit] Stores

Concord Mills opened in September of 1999 with over 200 stores. Its major establishments include Circuit City, Bass Pro Shops, Burlington Coat Factory, and Books-A-Million. Concord Mills is largely comprised of factory outlet stores for companies such as Old Navy, Nike, and Nautica.

[edit] Entertainment

At the center of the mall is a large food court that offers a variety of options ranging from typical fast food to a more traditional sit-down atmosphere. The mall is also home to a movie theatre operated by AMC, which at twenty-four screens is the largest theatre in the greater Charlotte area. There is also a Dave & Buster's, and NASCAR SpeedPark: a huge indoor-outdoor complex. The Speedpark is comprised of six huge go-karting tracks, a climbing wall, and a games/prizes facility. There is also an Indoor NASCAR Simulator, called Silicon Speedway.

[edit] Layout

The mall is designed in the shape of an infinity symbol or a race track. The circuit intersects itself only at the food court.

There are seven "neighborhoods" to the mall, each with its own entrance and distinct theme. For example, Neighborhood 5 is garden-themed, featuring a rustic green palette and stores like Earthbound Trading Co., while swanky Neighborhood 3 is called Fashion Court and showcases the OFF 5th Saks Fifth Avenue Outlet, a less pricier version of the famous department store, run by the same company.

[edit] Surrounding area

What was once simply a forest lining Interstate 85 in 1999, the area surrounding Concord Mills has quickly grown. Concord Mills Boulevard, the main road that runs alongside the mall's property, is lined with dozens of restaurants, stores, hotels, and car dealerships, with new establishments being added on a regular basis.

[edit] 2000 construction fire

On August 21, 2000 on a construction site near Concord Mills, a natrual gas pipeline ruptured sending flames to heights of about 100 feet. As a result of the explosion, law enforcement officials to closed local roads around the mall and Interstate 85 around rush hour (4 p.m.); the roads were reopened one hour later after the situation was contained[2]. The event received national network television coverage; FOX News Channel incorrectly called the mall "Concord Hills" during most of its coverage. News helicopters provided much of the video shown on national television.
