Conc jumping

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Concussion grenade jumping (usually abbreviated to concing or conc jumping) is a skill first devised in the the Quake mod Team Fortress and carried over to the Half-Life mod Team Fortress Classic, both of which are first-person shooter computer games. It is a derivative of grenade jumping, itself a derivative of rocketjumping.

Two classes, the Medic and the Scout, are issued concussion grenades; the normal use of these grenades is to knock enemies back a small distance and distort their view for about ten seconds. Players have found ways to take advantage of this and use the blast of the concussion grenade to jump very large distances in a very short amount of time; this technique is the concussion jump.

[edit] Concjumping techniques

There are several techniques used in concjumping. Most apply only to Team Fortress Classic.

[edit] Basic jump

The usual method (known as "thrown conc-jumping") is to throw the concussion grenade on to the floor and, just prior to detonation, run directly over the grenade and jump in the preferred direction of travel; the player will be propelled by the grenade in the exact angle between the grenade and the player at the moment of detonation.

[edit] Ledge assisted

Instead of throwing the grenade on the ground at the same level of the player, the player throws it a short distance down a ledge. The player can jump or fall on the explosion and be propelled further than what is possible by the basic jump. The farther the player is from the grenade at the explosion (so long as they remain inside the blast radius) the further they will fly.

Players can also throw the grenade below themselves after jumping over a large ledge. This is useful when the bottom of the ledge is far away or nonexistent.

[edit] Handheld

A more difficult method is known as "hand-held conc-jumping", where the grenade is not thrown but held in the player's hand to detonate as they jump. While this method is more difficult it can be performed with less space. This technique is very effective when used for vertical jumps. An enhanced version of a handheld jump is the "strafe conc" whereby the player holds down the left or right strafe key while jumping and turning into the jump. The "strafe conc" method can greatly increase the distance of the handheld jump. The hand-held conc jump works by amplifing your current vertical / horizontal momentum at the time the grenade goes off, thus determining how far you jump. For example, if the grenade goes off at the very peak of a normal jump, when you are neither rising from the jump nor yet falling from gravity and therefore have no vertical momentum, only horizontal, you will be shot straight forward. Most people time it so that the grenade goes off at the very start of their jump, when they have the most upward vertical speed, allowing them to go the most distance. You can even time the grenade to go off while you are falling, causing you to be shot straight down by the grenade. It is because of this that the "strafe conc" works, since on the Half-Life engine you can increase your horizontal speed by moving your mouse in the same direction as your strafe, a physics feature expolited in jumping techniques used to gain speed beyond the normal class speed limits known as "strafe-jumping" and "bunny hopping". Although extremely difficult, some players have even learned to combine bunny hopping with the hand-held conc jump in order to increase the distance of their hand-held conc jumps. Bunny hopping also is a technique that allows one to change directions in the air, greatly increasing the effectiveness of conc jumping in general by allowing a player to change the direction of his conc jump after he is already in the air, which enables a player to make very precise landings (often one can land directly on top of a flag). Hand-held conc-jumping can be accomplished in Team Fortress Classic, but isn't possible in "Quake World Team Fortress", "Quake 3 Fortress", or even Enemy Territory Fortress|ETF.

[edit] Double conc jump

The double concjump, usually performed with one thrown grenade and one handheld grenade is performed by throwing one grenade on the ground like in the basic jump and then when you are in the air, throwing the second grenade below oneself. This can be combined with the ledge assisted jump to cover even more distance.

[edit] Triple conc jump

The triple concjump is considerably more difficult to pull off; one must place two concussion grenades on the floor timed such that the player jumps using the first grenade to be a relatively short distance above the second grenade which then explodes. There are few instances in which such extraordinary jumps are required, and are usually limited to practice maps.

There are several techniques used for the first two grenades, for example a player can throw the second grenade a small distance away and conc jump there from the first grenade.

[edit] Juggling

If a player has a limitless supply of concs, they can keep themselves in the air forever. This is accomplished by throwing successive grenades under oneself while in the air. The timing is quite precise, and thus the technique is very difficult, requiring more practice than the previous methods.

The technique is most often used to travel upwards, however by throwing the concs at a more horizontal angle one can slowly descend. This is yet more difficult than standard juggling.
