[edit] Plot summary

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The story tells of Christopher Columbus's discovery of the New World and its effect on the indigenous people. This, the second of 1992's 500th anniversary Christopher Columbus films (the first being Warner Bros. Christopher Columbus: The Discovery), adheres to the historical facts of Columbus's (Gerard Depardieu) possessed quest to discover the New World, and his solicitation of Queen Isabella (Sigourney Weaver) to gain the necessary funding. Michael Wincott puts forth a worthy performance as a nasty Spanish nobleman whose mistreatment of the natives results in an open rebellion. Contrary to popular beliefs, the majority of the film is historically accurate.

1492 has been deemed by some as a very underrated movie, receiving negative reviews and little recognition despite its quality performances, travelogue-quality footage, beautiful scenery, and powerful ideas of accomplishment and fulfillment. The low reception is most likely due to occasional slow-paced dialogue and the role of Columbus being given to French actor Gerard Depardieu. However, many users on Yahoo! and IMDB were able to look beyond minor discrepancies in 1492 and rank the film as an intriguing historical account of Columbus's discovery.
