Cafasso image

Despite your reply in the talk of Joseph Cafasso that user:Evrik has anyway used some of the images, uploaiding on Commons as a generic {{PD}}. He is also starting somewhat an edit war with Ian Spackman who is deleting that image, and has given no argumentation for the use of the doubtful (and also bad quality) image. Maybe you can intervene and discourage Evrik from his aggressivity. Bye and good work. --Attilios 14:52, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi Computerjoe,

I see looking at the WikiProject user warnings page, that you are a participant in this project. I have recently started an undertaking to harmonise all user page warnings and templates. For this I would like your assistance. I have listed a number of ideas on the project template page here as a first draft. I fully appreciate that as with most editors and admins, that you are fairly busy. Therefore I am not looking for anyone to carry out the actual work, I am willing to do that myself, with help from a number of other RC Patrollers who have come forward. But what I am looking for is your invaluable input, on the draft ideas and also to suggest other ways you believe we may improve the templates. I do however require the services of a couple of administrators to put into effect some of the new templates, as they are currently protected. Please take 5 mins to look through the new templates page, and both the project and templates talk pages and leave any ideas or suggestions that you may have. Best regards Khukri (talk . contribs) 09:47, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
The last AC meeting (full log)
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Image:Turnovsky-Martin.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Turnovsky-Martin.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Chowbok 22:48, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Hewitt.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Hewitt.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. WJBscribe 19:35, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I added a new version of that photo of Patricia Hewitt so it would be good enough quality for the Infoboxpolitician template (but still lower quality than the original so I think fair use is satisfied) as such I think the old one is redundant. What do you think? Thanks. WJBscribe 03:46, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for voting in my RfA which at 51/20/6 unfortunately did not achieve consensus. In closing the nomination, Essjay remarked that it was one of the better discussed RfAs seen recently and I would like to thank you and all others who chose to vote for making it as such. It was extremely humbling to see the large number of support votes, and the number of oppose votes and comments will help me to become stronger. I hope to run again for adminship soon. Concordia Newsletter

NEWSLETTER

Concordia is currently trying to relaunch. I, and all the members of the ex-council, wish to welcome new members to the group. We are a group who aim to promote remaining civil, in an environment where messages can easily be interpretated wrongly.

Help out now!

  • Try and help people remain civil! Talk to them, and help them in any way possible. Do not be afraid to use the talk page.
  • Give people the Civility Barnstar.
  • Make and spread some Wikitokens so people know there are people to help if they want assistance.
  • Add banners or logos to your userpage to show your support.
  • Suggest some ideas! Add 'em to the talk page.

We are a community, so can only work though community contributions and support. It's the helping that counts.

Decision Making

The council expired one month ago, but due to the current position of the group the current council will remain until the position of the group can be assessed, and whether it would be sensible to keep Concordia going. For most decisions, however, it will be decided by all who choose to partake in discussions. I am trying to relaunch because of the vast amounts of new members we have received, demonstrating that the aims are supported.

If you wish to opt of of further talk-page communications, just let us know here.

Your request for a case

Hi - based on your request here, I'm going to try to allocate you a case :) there were only two to choose from, so by blind tab clicking (and other factors :P) can I suggest Wikipedia:AMA Requests for Assistance/Requests/January 2007/Sethie? It seems like quite a deep running dispute, and is heading towards mediation (formal), from advocacy of the other party. It might be good to try to avert mediation if you can, but in any case it should help to be able to talk with Geo.plrd (the other advocate) about the case, who I'm sure will be eager to bring it to an amicable resolution. Please do not upload still images in the GIF format

Hello and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I noticed that you've uploaded Image:RedcarClevelandLogo.gif in the GIF format. In the future, please save still GIF images in the PNG format before uploading (see Wikipedia:Preparing images for upload). PNG images almost always have a smaller file size, which decreases the amount of time they take to load. There are a bunch of other advantages to the PNG format such as lossless compression that you can read about on its Wikipedia article. —Remember the dot (t) 22:05, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

AMA Case

Hi - I have no idea about the background to the dispute, so I wouldn't be able to take it over completely, but by all means I'll be happy to co-advocate with you. What's the current status of the dispute, and your reason for seeking help? This should help me to get a sense of the debate :) Thanks, Martinp23 11:49, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks and..

I very, very, very much appreciate your attempts to negotiate something between me and TG in terms of where to take this conflict. For that I thank yo much.

And, I no longer feel the pull for your counsel. I am disapointed that you would look at my response and only see uncivility after TimidGuy slipped in such zingers as: "I don't see how we can ever deal with the disputed sources in the article if Sethie intends to change the focus of every RfC into a personal issue."

Would you be willing to read that again? "I don't see how we can ever deal with the disputed sources in the article if Sethie intends to change the focus of every RfC into a personal issue." It's ridiculous!

And "But I just don't see the pont, since Sethie would likely turn it into a personal issue."

Here is a guy, talking about me 3rd person, on my AMA page, making accusations about my future behavior, and innacurate descriptions of my current behavior (my RfC comments on the TM page).

Your response to this was to rebuke me for incivility for calling him on exagerations, ignore his incivility/innacuracy and then on my AMA page, give me a slap on the wrist for my userpage?

That's not what I was hoping for in an advocate!

As for my userpage, we can talk about that on my talk page.Sethie 19:06, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Even if a user is uncivil to you you must not be uncivil to them. Also, as for your userpage I thought it was my responsibility as a Wikipedian to remove them. If you took the names out from the comments, it would be fine. Computerjoe's talk 19:46, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for trying

HI, Computerjoe. Thanks so much for your efforts to deal with the dispute between Sethie and me. I can't quite understand why volunteers like yourself would be motivated to get involved in such messes, and I appreciate the generosity of you and others. : ) I'm sorry for my waffling regarding your suggestions on how to proceed and regarding an informal solution. Each time things settled down in the dispute, I thought maybe it would be OK.

I'm sorry to see that your advocee complained and that it's led to opening an investigation. Let me know if you need my support in any way. I value your sincere attempt, and I want to state again that just initiating the process and broaching an open discussion on the Advocate pages has seemed to help the situation. I'm confident that whatever further steps are taken will also help. As I understand, Sethie still has the assistance of Gary and Martin. TimidGuy 18:37, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

AMA investigation

Hi Computerjoe, I'm Wikiwoohoo, one of the deputy co-ordinators.

It has been brought to my attention that there have been problems and accusations of improper conduct that have arisen within the case of Sethie and TimidGuy.

What I'd like to do is find out all the facts behind this case and solve this problem as soon as possible. Would it be possible for you to provide me with a full statement of your version of events and once I have gathered the same from the two other users in question, I will be able to investigate fully.

I appreciate you may be busy outside Wikipedia so any reply in your own time will be very much appreciated, either on my talk page or if you prefer, my email address: shown on my user page. Many thanks for your time; I hope to be able to solve this problem as soon as I can. Wikiwoohoo 19:20, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

I voluteeered to co-advocate this case, and almost immediately concerns were raised over whether I was acting as mediator or advocate. I said I was acting as an advocate trying to find a mutually beneficial solution.
While I was acting as advocate, everything seemed to calm down. However, my advocee was uncivil on multiple occasions - which I warned him about - and I also removed something I saw as a personal attack from his user page. [2].
Sethie complained I was only seeing his incivility, not the other party's.
I referred it to investigation as I felt I might have acted inappropiately as an advocate. Thanks, Computerjoe's talk 19:28, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for providing me with your statement on this matter. I have now received other statements from the two other users involved and will provide my report within the next few days. I will provide you with a link to it once it is active. Wikiwoohoo 16:22, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
Many thanks for your co-operation in my investigation. My report into the matter can now be found here: Wikipedia:AMA Requests for Assistance/Requests/January 2007/Sethie#Investigation.

I hope this concludes the dispute that had been ongoing. Wikiwoohoo 16:40, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

WinLIKE

You nominated the article WinLIKE for deletion and the AfD consensus was to delete. However, an appeal has been made at deletion review to restore the article. The main argument is that sources which assert notability have now been provided. You may wish to comment here: Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2007 February 12#WinLIKE. Automated message to bot owners

As a result of discussion on the village pump and mailing list, bots are now allowed to edit up to 15 times per minute. The following is the new text regarding bot edit rates from Wikipedia:Bot Policy:

Until new bots are accepted they should wait 30-60 seconds between edits, so as to not clog the recent changes list and user watchlists. After being accepted and a bureaucrat has marked them as a bot, they can edit at a much faster pace. Bots doing non-urgent tasks should edit approximately once every ten seconds, while bots who would benefit from faster editing may edit approximately once every every four seconds.

Also, to eliminate the need to spam the bot talk pages, please add Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard to your watchlist. Future messages which affect bot owners will be posted there. Thank you. --Mets501 00:47, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Helping out with the Unassessed Wikipedia Biographies

Seeing that you are an active member of the WikiBiography Project, I was wondering if you would help lend a hand in helping us clear out the amount of unassessed articles tagged with {{WPBiography}}. Many of them are of stub and start class, but a few are of B or A caliber. Getting a simple assessment rating can help us start moving many of these biographies to a higher quality article. Thank you! --Ozgod 20:17, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
