[edit] Including Template:Doctl explanation

Concerning the revert today, I think it would be helpful to have a short explanation of the Documentation/Discussion formatting of Talk pages when using Template:Doctl. Since template talk pages are so unique, I think that the benefit of educating people about the template would overweigh the fear of having too much information. --J. J. 20:00, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Sure, you could test it here, add {{subst:doctl}} above. Then edit the result manually. Template:CompactDocToc (edit talk links history) has no parameters, you can remove much of its output, fix the rest, ready. If "fixing" isn't what you like use Template talk:X4 for a test as proposed on the doctl talk page (= doctl docu). X4 is a sandbox for templates. You could also link from the doctl docu to this page and back again with "see also" for an isolated example of CompactDocToc. But please don't add text to template CompactDocToc itself, it shows up on numerous pages using CompactDoctToc. -- Omniplex 21:37, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
I'm not following your recommendations. I don't need to test it as I had changed it just the way I thought it should be. What's wrong with the way I changed it? I have, however, been considering adding something like this on the template if people think it sounds reasonable:

<-- See Template:Doctl for instructions on setting up a template talk page with Documentation and Discussion sections. -->

Or maybe this is a comment I would add to Template:Doctl instead? Why are there two templates to begin with? Do some people use CompactDocToc without Doctl? I haven't messed around with templates too much, so I apologize if they're obvious answers! Anyone else want to help sort this out for me? --J. J. 02:23, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Probably I just don't get what you want. The templates are different because you can use CompactDocToc without using doctl, and vice versa. Check "what links here" for CompactDocToc, there are some. If you now add some text it's shown on all pages using CompactDocToc. Some of them completely unrelated to doctl. Most of them far away from the original doctl output, doctl is "substituted" once and then its output is edited manually, it just helps to create a docu. It makes no sense to "advertise" doctl on pages which either used it already (months ago), or have nothing to do with doctl. Because I don't get what you plan it sounds for me as if you could as well add a link to the "template deletion policy" or some other unrelated topic.
CompactDocToc is a short placeholder at the top of a page instead of a real ToC, the real ToC inserted later (not at its normal place) using magic word __TOC__. If used in conjunction with doctl between "docu" (part 1) and "discussion" (part 2). If used elsewhere who knows, check some "what links here" examples what they do with it.
On "my" templates I often start with doctl but remove the CompatDocToc part, because I think it confuses folks if the ToC isn't where it normally is. If you think it should be better explained please do, but do it either here (talk page of CompactDocToc), or on the doctl talk page, or if you prefer to do it on the template page put it in its "noinclude" part, then it's shown on page Template:CompactDocToc, but not on all pages using CompactDocToc. Your idea HTML-comment is dubious, everybody would download it without seeing it where it's included, unless (s)he's editing the page. If you insist on an XHTML comment make it short. -- Omniplex 03:05, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Thank you for your clarification. I've spent a lot of time in the past day getting familiar with templates. You may be interested in these two pages, the second of which is a draft of this template talk page (I'll probably edit this page once I get some answers on the first link below). --J. Nice, insert it here before our discussion. You could add {{ltsmeta|CompactDocToc}} resulting in
to the "see also" here (on Wikipedia). Preview result, no, you can't do that now, it's not available on Meta. Maybe copy it to Meta if you want a 1:1 correspondence. Or use a normal Toc with h2 + h3 (not h1 + h2) on Meta, the h1 + h2 is AzaToth's invention here, he went to the trouble to create his very own guideline exception for this h1 here (Wikipedia). But Meta is for all, not only the English Wikipedia, "they" might not like this h1 trick - I'd be one of "they". -- Omniplex 20:27, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
