Comme des Garcons, despite having a French name, is actually Japanese. It was started in Tokyo in 1969 by Rei Kawakubo.

The company is run by the Japanese, but their flagship stores are all in Paris and the designs come from Paris. It is marketed in both Paris and Tokyo as a Franco-Japanese fashion house based out of Paris. (This exoticism helps sales in Tokyo.)
