From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Companhia das Lezírias (Lezírias Company) is a state-run agriculture and forestry company located in the historical region of Ribatejo, and headquartered in Samora Correia, Benavente municipality, Portugal. The company has a dual quality of ecological sanctuary and periurban farming area, near Grande Lisboa subregion. The company's major productions include rice, wines, cork, and livestock. In addition to its farming, forestry, and animal production activities, the Companhia das Lezírias has organised top equestrian events of several disciplines.[1]

[edit] History

The Lezírias Company was constituted in 1836 when the Portuguese Crown sold properties located at the capital city's gates, about 48,000 hectares spread between rivers Tejo and Sado. Time reduced property to less than half for global crisis such as the Great Depression and the World Wars, as well as local climatic, seismic catastrophes and political turmoil led to extensive land transaction. Nevertheless, the enterprise led Portuguese agriculture throughout history, its functional and technological dynamic in animal and vegetable farming as in forestry being a legacy. After 138 years, the Lezírias Company was nationalized, hence returning to public ownership status. In the 3rd millennium the enterprise's economic sustainability and the policy to prevent urbanization from spreading there are the main tasks of its current administrations.
