Companhia Brasileira de Distribuição (CBD) - doing business as Grupo Pão de Açúcar - is a Brazilian company engaged in business retailing of food, general merchandise, electronic goods, home appliances and other products from its supermarkets, hypermarkets and home appliance stores.

At the end of 2004, the company operated 551 stores in Brazil, of which 496 were retail food stores. Of its retail food stores, 311 are located in São Paulo State, which represented 58% of CBD's net sales revenue from its retail food stores during the year of 2004.

Grupo Pão de Açúcar operates through different store concepts (and different banner logos):

  • Pão de Açúcar (196 supermarkets);
  • CompreBem (165 supermarkets);
  • Sendas (63 supermarkets);
  • Extra Hipermercados (72 hypermarkets);
  • Extra Eletro (55 home appliance stores).

Distribution and logistical centers are located within the Brazilian regional capitals of São Paulo, Brasilia, Fortaleza, Curitiba, Rio de Janeiro and Recife.

The company is jointly owned by Abílio Diniz, one of Brazil's wealthiest people, and by the French Groupe Casino.
