Commutation of sentence

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Commutation of sentence involves the reduction of legal penalties, especially of terms of imprisonment. Commutation is normally linked to prisoners' good behaviour. In the United States, reduction of sentence is handled by an executive head of government; In federal cases this is the U.S. Department of Justice. State sentences are usually handled by the governor's office. Unlike a pardon a commutation does not nullify the conviction and is often conditional. A commutation may be submitted on a prisoner by the President of the United States.
