Communist Party of Latvia (Latvian: Latvijas Komunistiskā partija) was a political party in Latvia. The party was founded by Social Democracy of the Latvian Territory, which had affiliated to RSDLP in 1904 and was allied with Bolsheviks thereafter; led Latvian Soviet republic 1919; name changed to CP in March 1919; 7,500 members in 1919.[1] The youth wing of the party was the Young Communist League of Latvia (LKJS).
In 1936, Workers Youth League of Latvia (LDJS), a youth organization, parallel to the LKJS, was formed by LKP. In 1940 LDJS began working overground.[2][3]
In 1940 the party was merged into the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (bolsheviks). The Latvian branch of CPSU(b) was known as Communist Party of Latvia (bolshevik) (Latvian: Latvijas Komunistiskā (boļševiku) partija, (LK(b)P). When the CPSU(b) was renamed as the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1952, the Latvian branch retook the old name LKP. [3] It was forbidden in 1991 without a trial, by parliament's decision.
