Telephones - mobile cellular: 17,346,000 (December 2006, [2]), 3 GSM cellular networks covering more than 85% of the territory (about 98% of the population) as well as one CDMA network. Telephone system: - general assessment: rapidly improving domestic and international service, especially in wireless telephony
domestic: good, modern services in urban areas; 98% of telephone network is automatic while 71% is digitised; trunk network is mostly microwave radio relay, with some fiber-optic cable; about one-third of exchange capacity is digital; roughly 3,300 villages have outdated or no service
international: satellite country code - 40; satellite earth station - 10 (Intelsat 4); digital, international, direct-dial exchanges operate in Bucharest.
