Polytrichum commune Hedw. |
Polytrichum commune (Common Haircap Moss or Common Hair Moss) is a species of moss with a cosmopolitan distribution in regions with high humidity and rainfall, where it grows in bogs, wet heathland and beside forest streams.
It is a large moss, forming dense cushions up to 40 cm deep. The stems are slender, about 1 mm diameter, with spirally-arranged leaves 5-10 mm long and 0.5 mm broad. The spores are produced in oval capsules 3-4 mm long, held above the plant on slender, wiry 3-5 cm long stems.
