Commander Cain is a fictional character in the original Battlestar Galactica science fiction TV series, portrayed by Lloyd Bridges. He is the commander of Battlestar Pegasus, the father of Lieutenant Sheba, and former lover of Cassiopeia.
Cain is one of the greatest heroes in the Colonial military; his battle strategies are legendary throughout the fleet. However, he is also known to be rather impulsive and a maverick. He inspires near-fanatical loyalty amongst his crew on the Pegasus; when Cain is relieved of duty by Commander Adama, the Pegasus crew nearly mutiny. Cain's crew offer to support him in a revolt, but Cain refuses, saying that he will not leave the fleet defenseless in the face of a likely Cylon attack - and while he may be many things, a mutineer is not one of them.
Cain eventually convinces Adama to let him return to command of his battlestar, which he takes into a near-suicidal attack on a duo of Cylon basestars. Cain, his crew and ship are subsequently lost in battle and are never heard from again (although their ultimate fate remains unknown).
Glen A. Larson, producer of Battlestar Galactica, attempted a revival in the late 1990s with a feature film project using Commander Cain and the Battlestar Pegasus.
