Commander is a commissioned Starfleet officer rank in the fictional Star Trek universe. Lieutenant commanders (including Data, Chakotay and Tuvok) are sometimes also referred to as "Commander."

The 22nd century Earth Starfleet has a "commander" rank, which Enterprise officers Charles Tucker III and T'Pol both hold.[citation needed]

"Commander" is established early in Star Trek: The Original Series[citation needed]. Though he wears the insignia of full commander for the entire series, Spock is referred to at least once as a lieutenant commander during the show's first season.

All of the main original series characters reach the rank of commander during or after the original series film era: Leonard McCoy and Montgomery Scott are commanders in Star Trek: The Motion Picture; Pavel Chekov, Hikaru Sulu, and Uhura are commanders in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan; and Christine Chapel is a commander in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.[1] Grace Lee Whitney's character wears a commander's insignia in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, although her character is not identified as Janice Rand in the credits, and Whitney appears wearing a non-commissioned officer's insignia in the next film. However, Rand is unambiguously a commander during the 23rd century flashback scenes in Star Trek: Voyager's "Flashback".[2]

William Riker and Beverly Crusher are both commanders throughout Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Deanna Troi is promoted to commander in the seventh season's "Thine Own Self".[2] Troi's promotion introduces the concept of a "promotion examination," establishing that her promotion is based at least in part on a series of examinations.[2]

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine focuses around the character of Benjamin Sisko, who spends the first half of the series as a commander.[2] Star Trek Voyager has no commanders as part of the titular ship's crew, with the first officer, Chakotay, holding the provisional rank of lieutenant commander.[2]
