"Come Close" is a single by rapper Common featuring a guest appearance by Mary J. Blige. It received a fair amount of airplay and was a moderate hit for his Electric Circus album. The song featured production from mainstream heavyweights, Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, otherwise known as The Neptunes, and was released in conjunction with a promo video directed by Sanaa Hamri and ?uestlove of The Roots. The B-Side to "Come Close" is "I Got A Right Ta," also produced by The Neptunes.

[edit] The Music Video
In the video for the song, Common visits his girlfriend, who is deaf (although this isn't mentioned in the song itself). As she looks outside of her window, Common raps the verses to the song, while using cardboard signs to communicate the meanings of the words to her. The second verse is as follows:
Put down your bags love, I know in the past love, Has been sort of hard in you, But I see the God in you, I just want to nurture it, Though this love may hurt a bit, We dealing wit this water love, You even give my daughter love, I want to build a tribe wit you, Protect and provide for you, Truth is I can't hide from you, The pimp in me, May have to die with you
He eventually proposes with the lines "I'm tired of the fast lane / I want you to have my last name", she gladly accepts, and the pair drive off.
This video was nominated at the MTV Video Music Awards 2003 for the MTV2 Award, but it lost to AFI's Girl's Not Grey.
[edit] Remixes
The song was remixed and renamed as "Come Closer", this time featuring guest spots from Pharrell Williams, Erykah Badu, and Q-Tip, and produced by J Dilla. It utilised a sample of Ramp's "Daylight", which was first used by A Tribe Called Quest for "Bonita Applebum". In many ways it's a throwback to De La Soul's remix of "Buddy" which featured various members of the Native Tongues entourage.
There were also some unofficial remixes of the original cut by Dutch producer Nicolay and Swedish producer Soul Supreme.
